Seriously. I’ve been asking this question all my life. I appreciate the kind thought of Elbert Hubbard coining the oh-so-familiar phrase to uplift the spirit of those sinking in adversity. But I do ponder on this proverb a lot. Because honestly, life is not all about lemons. We also have apples, grapes, cherries, peaches…. why did he not use pineapples? And I think life throwing watermelons at people would hurt more than a lemon, you know. It’ll be a better reference for misfortunes. Why the actual fudge would you refer to life’s tough calls as a lemon?
If I could call heaven and ask Hubbard even via expensive long distance call, I would. Though I’m not sure a conversation with him would actually be appealing to him. I’m actually pretty sure he’s probably hitting me on my nape right now for talking like this on his world renown quote… I’m glad he’s a ghost or I won’t be able to finish this article because my gorgeous body would be lying on the floor with 911 volunteers.
But referencing to a new year’s good luck feast aside, life not only has up and down roads, but knotty curves and cliffs and hanging 80-year old bamboo bridges as well.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE.
Poverty, communication, adultery, green cards, politics and a lot more – obviously life does not only give out lemons, but a whole basket of fruits of mischief and failures.
At times, we hang on to the littlest string of faith and we end up surrendering to difficulties that come. But think of it this way, if everything’s perfect, will people be able to appreciate life? Will you strive hard the way you have been from the past 5, 10, 20 years? Do you think you will enjoy a ride in a 2016 Rolls-Royce splurging money in an extravagant dream European tour if you were born with it?
I do not need to think, I have yes as the answer… but it will never make me feel fulfilled because I did not do anything worthy enough to get ’em. No cursing my boss behind his back for calling out of office hours, no flipping paper works from too much stress and no daily rides to the office- it wouldn’t make me, or anyone, feel that they deserve it because they did not pass through the hard-earned raise and effort into getting it.
AND IF LIFE DOES NOT THROW LEMONS, WE CAN MAKE SALAD, RIGHT?
We pass through a lot of stages in life, but we don’t have much choice but to either face it head on or let it convince us into giving up. A lot of lives are cut without them having to achieve their own goals, yet you see yourself purposely jumping off from the 10th floor just because you didn’t get what you want when you could have started with a new perspective while you raise your middle finger to life.
YOU ONLY EFFIN’ LIVE ONCE AND YOU ONLY LEAVE ONCE! NO TURNING BACK.
If making lemonade or a salad doesn’t seem enough to get back to life and tell him he sucks… then..
MAKE LIFE TAKE HIS FRUITS BACK AND DEMAND FOR HIS MANAGER.
Life will ask for a lot of things. We pass through stages that will make us look for hay in a needle sack. But truth be told, the life you think screwing up your living freedom is what it means to live life fully.
And if life failed to have you down on the ground and give up on him. You should talk to his manager because he should get fired.
